Peak Performance: A Champion Athlete

Every transformation starts with a story, and mine is one of resilience, rediscovery, and a relentless pursuit of health. Dropping to 70.9 kilograms on my 61st birthday in September 2024, I feel more vibrant and energized than I have in decades. But my journey to this point was anything but easy—it was shaped by lessons learned, hard choices, and the determination to reclaim the athlete I once was.

In my teens and twenties, I thrived as a competitive athlete. I excelled in track events—100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and marathons—fueling my body with discipline and training. My health was impeccable, and my energy boundless. But in 2001, at age 38, I stepped away from the competitive arena after a final, unforgettable race at the Southern Athletics League in Plymouth, England. What followed, however, was an unexpected and steep decline in my health.

Plugged into monitors, this was a pivotal moment when I realized the true cost of neglecting my health—physically and emotionally.

The transition to a sedentary lifestyle was dramatic. Fast food, indulgent meals, and long hours of writing replaced the structured days of training. By late 2002, I weighed 96 kilograms and felt sluggish, bloated, and increasingly dependent on blood pressure medication. Even simple tasks like bending to tie my shoes became difficult, and sharp chest pains reminded me daily of how far I’d strayed from my former self.

Struggles and Setbacks: Fighting to Reclaim My Health

Desperate to regain my health, I tried everything—fad diets, intense workout regimens, and even a 40-day water-only fast. While these efforts yielded temporary results, they were unsustainable. My weight repeatedly rebounded, particularly around my midsection. Frustrated, I realized these programs didn’t address my unique needs. They were generic solutions for a deeply personal problem.

The Turning Point

Everything changed when I asked myself: “Do I want to depend on medication for the rest of my life?” The answer was clear—no. It was time to take back control. As an engineer familiar with Axiomatic Design Theory, I knew the power of structured problem-solving. Applying this approach to my health, I identified my goals, analyzed my habits, and designed a system tailored to me.

Building My Personalized Plan

Using the principles of Axiomatic Design, I crafted a plan rooted in sustainable strategies:

  • Intermittent Fasting: Adopting an 8-hour eating window.
  • Plant-Based Diet: Focusing on detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, and muscle-supporting foods.
  • Targeted Fasting: Incorporating periodic 7-day water-only fasts for system resets.
  • Exercise Renewal: Rekindling my passion for speed endurance and strength training.

This approach wasn’t about quick fixes—it was about long-term transformation. Gradually, my weight stabilized at 70 kilograms, my blood pressure normalized, and I no longer relied on medication. I felt empowered and energized, reconnecting with the athlete I once was.
